Man Utd boss Amorim confident of Premier League title challenge soon

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim believes the club can fight for the Premier League title in the next few years, contradicting Sir Alex Ferguson’s timeline.

MANCHESTER United manager Ruben Amorim believes the club can challenge for the Premier League title far sooner than the decade feared by legendary former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Red Devils have not won the English league since Ferguson’s final triumph in 2013.

Ferguson recently suggested United could face a title drought similar to Liverpool’s 30-year wait, saying it “could be 10 years, 11 years” before they win again.

Amorim respectfully disagreed with that lengthy assessment ahead of United’s match against Aston Villa.

“He understands football more than me, especially English football,” Amorim told reporters on Friday.

“I truly believe that we can fight for the title in the next (few) years. And I think it’s not going to take so many years.”

United currently sit sixth in the Premier League table after an inconsistent season.

Amorim also addressed comments from club captain Bruno Fernandes, who revealed United had wanted to sell him in the summer.

Fernandes said he stayed because he remained in Amorim’s plans, but was hurt by the club’s initial stance.

Amorim said his compatriot had “said what he’s feeling” and that matters were now clear after discussions with the board.

The manager praised Fernandes’s commitment, calling him an example who “puts everything on the line in every training session and every match”. – AFP
