Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior says no player is guaranteed a starting place, refusing to back goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after his errors against Arsenal.
LONDON: Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has refused to confirm Robert Sanchez as his first-choice goalkeeper, insisting every player must earn their place.
Sanchez’s error-strewn performance in Wednesday’s 3-2 League Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal has put his position in doubt for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Brentford.
The Spaniard was caught out of position for Ben White’s opening goal and spilled a cross for Arsenal’s second.
“I’m here to assess every position. I don’t have number ones and number twos, it’s not how I work,” Rosenior told a press conference.
“At every club there has to be competition. You have to earn your spot in this team.”
He added that this message applied to all players, with no guaranteed starters in any position.
One player set to leave is Facundo Buonanotte, with his loan from Brighton likely to be cut short for a move to Leeds.
“In terms of the games and minutes he’s had it’s not quite what he wants so we’re looking into the best solution for him,” said Rosenior.
Cole Palmer and Reece James, yet to feature under Rosenior, trained on Thursday and could face Brentford.
Chelsea’s preparations have been hampered by a virus outbreak at their Cobham training ground.
Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens were among those absent on Thursday with high temperatures.
