Ruben Amorim warns Man Utd hierarchy to ‘do their job’

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim insists he is the manager, not just a coach, and tells the club’s recruitment staff to perform their duties

RUBEN Amorim has warned Manchester United’s hierarchy to “do their job” following a 1-1 draw at Leeds United.

The Portuguese boss hinted at rifts behind the scenes in a pointed post-match press conference.

Amorim insisted he must be allowed to work without interference as the club’s manager.

“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United,” Amorim said.

“I know that my name is not (Thomas) Tuchel, it’s not (Antonio) Conte, it’s not (Jose) Mourinho but I’m the manager.”

He stated his intention to see out his role for the agreed 18-month period unless the board decides otherwise.

“In every department – the scouting department, the sporting director – needs to do their job,” he added.

Recent reports claim head of recruitment Christopher Vivell advised Amorim to adapt his tactics.

The manager is also said to have had disagreements over transfer targets with director of football Jason Wilcox.

Amorim replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag in November 2024, initially as head coach.

He has since pushed for the manager title and more influence within the club’s structure.

Brenden Aaronson put Leeds ahead at Elland Road before Matheus Cunha’s quick equaliser.

The draw spared United from a first league defeat to their rivals since 2002.

Amorim is under contract until 2027 but has struggled to meet expectations.

United currently sit outside the Premier League’s top four positions.

The club last won the English title in 2013 and finished 15th last season.

They also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham during that campaign.
