Mirabel Ting leads Malaysian golfers at Maybank Championship 2025

Mirabel Ting shoots five-under 67 in the opening round of the Maybank Championship 2025, leading the Malaysian contingent at KLGCC.

KUALA LUMPUR: Rising star Mirabel Ting led the Malaysian contingent during the opening round of the Maybank Championship 2025 with an impressive five-under 67.

The 19-year-old from Miri finished tied 11th with ten other golfers at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

She displayed poise and precision throughout her round by sinking six birdies against a lone bogey. “I had a really good start, I birdied the first hole,” she told reporters after her round.

Ting emphasised the importance of staying patient and trusting her putting throughout the day.

She admitted that adapting to professional golf has been challenging since turning pro this year. “I did struggle a bit adapting to life as a professional golfer, but I keep telling myself professional golf is hard,” she explained.

Ting tries to focus on her own game and enjoy every moment on tour rather than watching the leaderboard.

She made her debut at last year’s Maybank Championship as an amateur but approaches this year’s event with a sharper edge. “Definitely a lot of pressure and expectations, but I kind of put everything aside,” she added.

Ting believes that whether amateur or professional, a golfer still hits the ball alone, which helps her maintain perspective.

Known for her composure, she credited her growth to learning from past mistakes on the course. “When I started bogeying, I used to get really nervous and here comes the bogey train,” she recalled.

She has learned to let go of mistakes, which helped her rebound with birdies during her round.

Meanwhile, Liyana Durisic finished as the second-best Malaysian with a four-under 68 to sit tied 21st.

Kelly Tan, Ashley Lau, and Genevieve Ling each posted three-under 69 to finish tied 32nd. – Bernama
