Malaysia’s MLBB team, fresh from a world title defence, aims for its first SEA Games gold in Thailand with boosted confidence and momentum
KUALA LUMPUR: Fresh from a successful world title defence, Malaysia’s national esports team is riding a wave of confidence into its gold medal mission at the 2025 SEA Games.
National coach Michael Bocado said the timely victory has significantly raised the team’s momentum ahead of the regional games.
“For sure, we’re gonna do everything we can to achieve a gold,” he told reporters.
Malaysia delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Cambodia in the IESF World Esports Championship grand final at Quill City Mall.
The team successfully defended its world title for a second consecutive year with its all-star lineup.
Michael stressed the team remains cautious and focused despite the positive momentum.
“But we’re not gonna be overconfident… we will add more strategies, we will add more heroes,” he said.
Player Muhd Haqqullah Ahmad Shahrul Zaman noted the team’s chemistry had improved through its consistent world championship run.
He emphasised that a SEA Games gold would hold great symbolic importance for Malaysia’s esports scene.
“If we become the SEA Games champion… we’ll get the chance to make history,” he added.
The Malaysian Esports Federation has set a target of winning two gold medals in Thailand.
The federation aims for one gold each in the men’s and women’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang events.
Malaysia has yet to win a gold in MLBB since the event debuted at the SEA Games in 2019.
The men’s team took silver and the women’s team earned bronze at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia. – Bernama
