Malaysia’s Nur Syafiqah Hamzah wins her first SEA Games gold in women’s singles pencak silat, ending a two-decade drought for the nation
NATIONAL pencak silat exponent Nur Syafiqah Hamzah clinched her maiden SEA Games gold medal in the women’s singles event today.
Syafiqah scored 9.960 points in the final at the Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani, defeating Brunei’s Nur Wasiqah Aziemah Rosihan who scored 9.920 points.
She described the feeling as very special after dreaming of the moment for a long time.
“In terms of my overall performance, I am satisfied,” Syafiqah said when contacted.
“I managed to control my emotions, maintain focus, and give my best on the arena.”
She added that the victory is not the end but the beginning of a new step towards greater challenges.
The win ends Malaysia’s 20-year wait for gold in the women’s singles event.
The nation’s last victory in the category was by Suzy Sulaiman at the 2005 SEA Games in the Philippines. – Bernama
