Amanda Anisimova seeks her first career win against fellow American Jessica Pegula in a high-stakes Australian Open quarter-final clash.
MELBOURNE: Amanda Anisimova is determined to snap her winless streak against compatriot Jessica Pegula when they meet in the Australian Open quarter-finals.
The 24-year-old American advanced to her first Melbourne quarter-final with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 victory over China’s Wang Xinyu.
Sixth seed Pegula booked her spot by defeating defending champion Madison Keys in straight sets.
Anisimova has lost all three of her previous meetings with the 31-year-old Pegula.
“We’ve always had some great matches. I mean, she’s such a great player. I really like her game,” said Anisimova.
“I’m sure it’s going to be a tough battle again.”
The American said her previous record against Pegula is not a mental hurdle.
“I feel like I always have a chance against anyone. It’s (the record) not really in my head,” she added.
Anisimova enjoyed a breakthrough 2025, reaching the finals at Wimbledon and the US Open.
A potential semi-final against world number one Iga Swiatek awaits the winner of their match.
Her fourth-round victory over Wang was tightly contested in the first set, which went to a tiebreak.
Anisimova secured the opener with powerful groundstrokes before breaking twice early in the second set.
Wang took a medical timeout for an upper leg issue but could not mount a comeback.
Anisimova sealed the match with an ace to complete the straight-sets win.
