World number one Aryna Sabalenka says her goal is simply to improve her game, not seek revenge for last year’s Australian Open final loss.
WORLD number one Aryna Sabalenka said she is not motivated by revenge after losing her Australian Open crown in a shock defeat last year.
The Belarusian fell to American Madison Keys in the 2025 final, missing the chance to win three consecutive titles at Melbourne Park.
Sabalenka said her mindset remains the same regardless of being a defending champion or a runner-up.

“It doesn’t matter which tournament it is,” she said ahead of a warm-up event in Brisbane.
“If I’m defending champion, if I lost in the first round last year, the goal is always the same — to bring my best tennis and to improve my game.”
She emphasised her focus is solely on self-improvement and being fully prepared.
Sabalenka had an unconventional preparation, playing Nick Kyrgios in a “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition in Dubai.
She expressed happiness at returning to Australia, where she enjoys the atmosphere and fan support.
“I think the atmosphere — it’s always a full crowd (in Brisbane),” she said.
“Everyone really engages a lot with tennis. Also in Melbourne, the support there is incredible.”
When asked if last year’s defeat provided extra motivation, she said she is always super motivated in Australia.
“Of course remembering last year’s final, I really want to do just a little bit better than I did last year,” she added with a smile.
Sabalenka explained she chooses to start her season in Brisbane for the guaranteed high-level competition.
This year’s Brisbane International draw features seven of the world’s top 10 players.
“It’s a tough draw, a lot of great players,” she noted.
“It’s a lot of matches before hitting the Australian Open.”
Sabalenka has a first-round bye and will face either Spain’s Cristina Bucsa or a qualifier in the second round. – AFP
