Sinner and Gauff storm into Miami Open semi-finals

Jannik Sinner and Coco Gauff powered into the Miami Open semi-finals with dominant straight-sets victories on Thursday.

MIAMI: World number two Jannik Sinner cruised into the ATP Miami Open semi-finals with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win over American Frances Tiafoe. The Italian champion advanced in just 71 minutes at Hard Rock Stadium.

Sinner has now won 30 consecutive sets at the ATP Masters 1000 level. He has not dropped a set at this tier since last October in Shanghai.

“I started off very well, was serving very good in really important moments so that for sure helped me,” Sinner said. The 2024 Miami champion fired 14 aces and 33 winners in the match.

Sinner will next face world number four Alexander Zverev for a place in the final. The German swept past Francisco Cerundolo 6-1, 6-2 in his quarter-final.

On the women’s side, American fourth seed Coco Gauff overwhelmed Czech Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-1. She reached Saturday’s final in 89 minutes.

Gauff will play for the title against the winner of a semi-final between Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. Rybakina beat Sabalenka in January’s Australian Open final.

Sabalenka avenged that defeat in the Indian Wells final earlier this month. She now hopes to extend her 9-7 lead in their rivalry.
