First Malaysian original content

PRIME Video, the global streaming service, has unveiled a captivating new feature film, Budak Flat, as its first Amazon Original production in Malaysia. Its users in Malaysia and across 24 other Asian countries can start enjoying an exclusive cinematic experience of the Malaysian film that will be released on Nov 16.

Budak Flat delves into the gritty and evocative backdrop of a neglected apartment complex in Kuala Lumpur, where a web of concealed secrets, allegiances, and betrayals unravels. At its heart, the story revolves around two brothers, Aman and Riz, one a reformed snatch thief and the other a formidable drug kingpin. Reluctantly, they become each other’s most deadly adversaries.

Tensions rise when Aman is accused of killing a respected gang member, pushing him to a precarious crossroads. In order to escape the clutches of Riz’s gang, Aman must either uncover the true culprit or face an undesirable destiny. As the rivalry between the two brothers escalates, the residents of the low-cost flats are drawn into the unexpected gang warfare within their own living spaces.

Prime Video’s Southeast Asia director David Simonsen, expressed his pleasure in collaborating with Skop Productions to bring Budak Flat to Prime Video, supporting Malaysian storytelling and sharing it with audiences in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Co-director Eugene Lim emphasised that Budak Flat explores the dilemma of choosing between family and personal choices, depicting the intense struggle of two brothers surviving in a rough neighbourhood. The film’s setting in downtown Kuala Lumpur’s iconic flats is designed to capture the diversity, texture, and rugged ambiance of the flat and its community.

Producer Shamin Yusof, known for bringing action films like KL Gangster Underworld and Abang Long Fadil to Malaysian audiences, highlighted the film’s thrilling narrative of territory and turf wars. With standout performances from Zahiril, Pablo and Nabila, the story raises questions about who is right and wrong in the battle for survival.

What sets Budak Flat apart is its unwavering commitment to authenticity, showcasing the rich tapestry of Malaysian culture, traditions and daily life. The film offers a glimpse into the lives of neighbours who share not just a roof but also friendship, laughter and the pursuit of their dreams in the tightly packed apartment complex.

Skop Productions is the force behind the film’s production, with Syafiq Yusof as an advisor. The film is co-directed by Lim, making his directorial debut after an extensive career in TV commercials across Southeast Asia, along with Woo Ming Jin and Faizal Ishak.
