SET to debut next August, Alien: Romulus is the next entry in the Alien franchise and recently, director Fede Alvarez had to “go through the incredibly tense process” of letting Ridley Scott watch the “director’s cut” of the film.

A lead producer on Romulus, Scott created and directed the original Alien in 1979, along with the prequel films Prometheus and Alien: Covenant in the last decade.

Speaking to Guillermo del Toro at the DGA Latino Summit 2023, Alvarez explained that he wanted Scott to see the film before anyone else.

“Everyone gave me the head’s up that Ridley is really tough. He’s really tough, particularly if it has something to do with his movies. He was really tough on Blade Runner 2049, which I thought was a masterpiece, and he had issues with it because it’s really hard for him because it’s his work,” he said.

Despite being terrified to meet Scott in person after he watched the rough cut of the film, Alvarez knew he had to hear the older filmmaker’s thoughts.

“Scott then walked into the room and said, ‘Fede, what can I say? It’s ****ing great,’” Álvarez continued about Scott’s reaction to the film.

“My family knows it was one of the best moments of my life to have a master like him, who I admired so much, to even watch a movie I made and talk to me for an hour about what he liked about it. One of the best compliments he gave was, ‘The dialogue is great. Are you the writer?’ Yes.”

Alvarez made his mark in the English film sphere after he wrote and directed 2013’s Evil Dead and then Don’t Breathe in 2016.

Romulus will be the first film in the franchise after Disney acquired Fox in 2017, and is set for release on Aug 16 next year.
