Heavy rains wreak havoc in Southern Tamil Nadu

NEW DELHI: Heavy rains have caused havoc in several districts of India’s Tamil Nadu state, forcing authorities to launch large-scale rescue and relief operations.

Tens of thousands of people were stranded due to flooding in various parts of Tamil Nadu’s southern region.

Residential areas and roads were submerged in several places.

More than 7,500 people were moved to temporary shelters, local media reported.

About 800 train passengers got stranded at the Srivaikuntam station in the district of Thoothukudi due to a damaged rail line, according to reports.

Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi are among the worst affected districts.

Tamil Nadu’s chief minister M.K. Stalin arrived in New Delhi on Monday to discuss the disaster situation with the federal government.

The state capital Chennai early this month suffered heavy rains and flooding in the wake of Cyclone Michaung.–Bernama
