Security-driven redesign of Malaysian passport and MyKad expected by Q2-Q3 2026, says Home Minister
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is set to introduce a new-design passport and MyKad by the end of the second quarter or early third quarter this year, with the changes driven by security requirements rather than cosmetic updates, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Saifuddin said both documents are classified as security documents and require periodic upgrades to address evolving risks, including counterfeiting.
“This is not done arbitrarily. These are security documents.
“After a certain period, we have a responsibility to introduce new features to match changing security needs,” Saifuddin told the reporters after the Home Minister’s 2026 address.
He said Malaysia’s passport currently ranks third globally in terms of visa-free travel access, making trust and document integrity a key priority.
“Within six months, Malaysians will have a new-design passport,” he said.
Saifuddin assured the public that existing passports and MyKad will remain valid until their expiry dates, and that the government would provide advance notice to prevent congestion or panic.
“We will notify the public at least six months in advance.
“There is no need to rush or replace documents immediately.”
He said user specifications involving the Immigration Department and the National Registration Department had been finalised, with remaining prerequisites now being completed ahead of rollout.
Details on new security features and implementation dates will be announced once preparations are concluded, he added.
