France’s Marine Le Pen files cassation appeal alongside 10 others over European Parliament funds embezzlement conviction.
MOSCOW: France’s National Rally faction leader Marine Le Pen, along with 10 other defendants, has filed a cassation appeal against the court’s decision in the case involving the embezzlement of European Parliament funds, according to French broadcaster BFMTV, citing the prosecutor’s office, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
The deadline for the defendants to file an appeal is midnight on Tuesday.
The European Parliament, in turn, filed an appeal to have the opportunity to present its arguments during the cassation hearing, BFMTV reported.
Each of the defendants reportedly filed an appeal, which could delay the judicial process.
On July 7, Le Pen was given the opportunity to run in the election after her sentence in the case was reduced and enabled her eligible to run for election.
However, she still has to serve one year under electronic monitoring. The politician had earlier stated that she would not run her campaign with an electronic bracelet attached.
Subsequently, Le Pen announced her intention to run for office and contest the verdict in the Court of Cassation.
The prosecutor’s office confirmed that the electronic bracelet will not be fitted on Le Pen until the court delivers its decision.
The court is expected to deliver a ruling before the presidential election in April 2027.
