Penang’s adult smoking prevalence drops 15.2%, with state officials calling for flight announcements and a federal ban on vape products.

GEORGE TOWN: Penang has recorded a 15.2% decline in adult smoking prevalence according to the latest National Health and Morbidity Survey.

State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the figure represents tens of thousands fewer smokers.

He noted that vape product use in the state is about 3%, equating to an estimated 38,000 electronic cigarette users.

“These figures are lower than in many other states,” Gooi said.

He attributed the positive trend to the state government’s enforcement, health education and public awareness initiatives.

Gooi expressed hope that implementing a ban on electronic cigarettes would further reduce smoking rates.

The state is collaborating with health authorities, airlines and airport operators to raise awareness of smoking bans.

He proposed that international flights make announcements reminding visitors that smoking is prohibited in designated areas.

This includes the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“The ban is in line with the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024,” he added.

Gooi said the state government is prepared to comply with any federal decision on a nationwide vape ban.

“Should the Cabinet agree to implement a ban covering not only the sale but also the use of electronic cigarettes, the Penang state government will comply,” he stated.

Media reports previously indicated the Ministry of Health plans to implement a vape ban starting this year.
