Court orders psychiatric evaluation for driver in fatal student crash

A Honda Jazz driver charged with dangerous driving causing death has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at Permai Hospital in Johor Bahru.

KUALA TERENGGANU: A magistrate’s court has ordered a psychiatric evaluation for a man charged with dangerous driving causing the death of a university student.

Magistrate Noor Mazrinie Mahmood granted the order for Mohd Izuddin Zakaria, 32, under Section 342(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Anith Nabilah Rusli applied for the evaluation, informing the court the accused is currently on psychotropic medication.

The accused, represented by a National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer, did not enter a plea after the charge was read.

Mohd Izuddin is accused of driving a Honda Jazz dangerously on Jalan Kemajuan here at 1.55 pm on Jan 5.

The alleged offence resulted in an accident that caused the death of Syakirah Hanan Mazli, 25.

Syakirah Hanan, a second-semester Postgraduate Diploma in Education student at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), died at the scene.

Her Perodua Viva was struck head-on by the Honda Jazz at a traffic light junction.

He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The charge carries a jail term of five to 10 years and a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000 upon conviction.

It also mandates disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least five years from the conviction date.

The court denied the accused bail and suspended all classes of his driving licence.

The case will be mentioned again on Feb 12.
