Mexico’s president rules out US troop deployment after Trump talks

President Claudia Sheinbaum says US military intervention “not on the table” after discussing security and sovereignty with Donald Trump.

MEXICO CITY: President Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly ruled out allowing US troops on Mexican soil following discussions with US President Donald Trump.

Sheinbaum stated she told Trump that any deployment of American military personnel was “not on the table.”

“We spoke about various topics, including security with respect for our sovereignties, reducing drug trafficking, trade, and investments,” the Mexican president said on social media.

The talks followed Trump’s reiteration last week that land attacks against drug cartels would follow recent US maritime operations.

Trump did not specify where or when such ground operations might occur.

Mexico extradited dozens of cartel leaders to the United States in 2025 and has reinforced border cooperation.

However, Sheinbaum has consistently voiced opposition to any foreign military intervention.

Trump recently told Mexico it had to “get their act together” after months of pressure over drugs and trade.

He called Sheinbaum a “terrific person” but confirmed he is pushing her to permit US troops to tackle cartels.

The US president noted Sheinbaum has previously rebuffed such offers.

Since the operation to seize Venezuela’s president from Caracas, Trump has also made threats against other leftist governments in the region.

These include Cuba, Colombia, and Mexico.
