Trump slaps 25% tariffs on nations trading with Iran

US President Donald Trump imposes 25% tariffs on any country doing business with Iran, citing Tehran’s crackdown on protests.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced an immediate 25% tariff on any country trading with Iran.

The move ramps up pressure on Tehran over its violent crackdown on a wave of domestic protests.

“Effective immediately, any Country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” Trump said on Truth Social.

He declared the order “final and conclusive.”

According to the economic database Trading Economics, Iran’s main trading partners are China, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq.

The tariff announcement coincides with Trump considering possible military action against Iran.

Rights groups have reported a growing death toll from the protest crackdown.

“Air strikes would be one of the many, many options that are on the table,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said earlier Monday.

She noted a diplomatic channel to Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff remains open.

Leavitt added that Iran was taking a “far different tone” in private than in its public statements.
