Flood evacuees in Sarawak drop to 1,773 as 10 relief centres stay open in Serian, Sibu, Bintulu and Sebauh districts.

KUCHING: The number of flood victims in Sarawak has decreased slightly to 1,773 people as of 8 am today.

The evacuees, from 560 families, are still taking shelter in temporary relief centres across the state.

This is down from 1,822 victims from 587 families recorded yesterday evening.

The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee reported that 10 relief centres remain active.

The active centres are located in the districts of Serian, Sibu, Bintulu and Sebauh.

The Sekolah Kebangsaan Tanah Puteh relief centre in Serian houses the most victims with 448 people from 131 families.

The Dewan Masyarakat Serian centre is sheltering 325 victims from 94 families.

Meanwhile, the Dewan Suarah Bintulu centre is accommodating 306 people from 114 families.

The Dewan Sri Kemena Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sebauh centre is providing refuge for 164 victims from 53 families.

The current flood disaster in Sarawak began on December 31 last year.

It initially affected several areas around Kuching city following continuous heavy rain. – Bernama
