Sarawak Premier Abang Johari announces a state-level committee to devise sustainable engineering and drainage solutions for persistent flooding issues.
BINTULU: Sarawak will establish a special committee to formulate comprehensive, long-term solutions to the state’s flood problems.
Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the committee will examine all options, including engineering, drainage systems and river management.
“I will set up a committee at the state level for us to plan and implement the best solutions to the flood problem,” he told reporters after visiting a flood evacuation centre here.
He acknowledged suggestions to dredge rivers but noted sedimentation would continue regardless.
“We are looking for other alternative approaches. We will discuss first; we do not want to make hasty announcements,” he added.
Abang Johari said flood resolution efforts would also involve developers.
Commenting on infrastructure damage, he said road repairs would be delayed until after the monsoon season to avoid repeated work.
He also praised the effective management of flood aid in the Sebauh area, where delivery of shelter, welfare and health support had been smooth.
