World number one Carlos Alcaraz is hungry to win his first Australian Open and become the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam.
MELBOURNE: World number one Carlos Alcaraz declared himself hungry to break his Australian Open drought and complete a career Grand Slam.
The Spaniard identified winning in Melbourne as his primary goal for the year, aiming to become the youngest man to win all four majors. “I’m just hungry for the title, hungry to do a really good result here,” Alcaraz said.
He would surpass Rafael Nadal’s record by winning the title at age 22. Alcaraz’s best previous performance at the Australian Open is the quarter-finals.
The top seed begins his campaign against Australian Adam Walton. He arrives with confidence after a good pre-season and a recent exhibition win over rival Jannik Sinner.
When asked if he would swap titles at the other three majors for one Australian Open crown this year, Alcaraz smiled and said he could not choose. “Obviously complete the career Grand Slam is something amazing to do,” he added.
The build-up has also featured questions about his coaching change. Alcaraz recently split with long-time coach Juan Carlos Ferrero after seven successful years.
He described the decision as mutual and said he has full confidence in his new team, led by assistant Samuel Lopez. “I’m just feeling well,” Alcaraz stated.
