Kelantan JPJ says 34 locals have been charged since 2023 for vehicle offences involving foreign nationals, with RM34,000 in fines.

KUALA KRAI: Thirty-four locals have been charged in court since 2023 for offences related to vehicle transactions involving foreign nationals, with fines totalling RM34,000.

Kelantan Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Mohd Misuari Abdullah said enforcement was not only focused on foreign drivers but also on Malaysians who breached the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333).

He said action will also be taken against business premises selling motorcycles to foreign nationals without transferring ownership.

“Our officers are empowered to make warrantless arrests under Section 112 of the Road Transport Act 1987 involving foreign drivers. From January to June this year, JPJ Kelantan issued 749 notices under the Foreign Drivers Operation (Op PeWA) and the Integrated Drug Operation on Commercial Vehicles,” Mohd Misuari said at a press conference here today.

He said enforcement action was taken against 188 vehicles during the period, with 176 vehicles impounded. The most common offence recorded was driving without a Competent Driving Licence (CDL) with 350 cases, followed by expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM) (144 cases), lack of insurance coverage (142 cases), misuse of LKM (nine cases), and other technical offences (104 cases).

Meanwhile, 297 drivers have been screened under the Integrated Drug Operation on Commercial Vehicles since July 1, with 10 testing positive for ketum abuse, Mohd Misuari said.

He added that from January to June this year, JPJ Kelantan issued 42,644 notices during various enforcement operations, involving 91,228 vehicle inspections.
