Perlis MB Abu Bakar Hamzah quits Bersatu’s top council to prioritise state administration and attract investors.
KANGAR: Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah announced today that he has resigned from the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Supreme Leadership Council (MPT), having submitted his resignation letter last week.
Abu Bakar said while the letter was sent to the central Bersatu leadership, he remains the Perlis Bersatu state chief and Kangar Bersatu division chief.
He said the resignation allows him to focus on administering Perlis, especially attracting investors and achieving key performance indicators (KPIs) as Menteri Besar until the end of the current state legislative assembly term next year.
“I am unable to give my full commitment to the Bersatu Supreme Leadership Council because of the heavy workload and ongoing challenges in Perlis, especially since I have only about a year left to steer the state administration,” he said.
He told reporters this during a welcoming programme for a delegation from Satun, Thailand, held in conjunction with the resumption of the Kuala Perlis-Satun ferry service at the Kuala Perlis Concourse Building Jetty here today.
The cross-border ferry service had been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the opening of the state legislative assembly sitting on June 3, the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, decreed that Abu Bakar should be given the space to continue leading the state until the end of the 15th state legislative assembly term without interference.
Abu Bakar also said that, to his knowledge, Sena assemblyman and Perlis state executive councillor Datin Marzita Mansor had similarly resigned from Bersatu as an MPT member.
However, attempts by Bernama to contact Marzita for verification at the time of writing were unsuccessful.
