Penang addresses ferry and rail connectivity concerns for travellers

Penang’s chief minister acknowledges ferry-rail link issues at Butterworth KTM station, pledging upgrades to improve the gateway experience for visitors.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government is fully aware of public concerns regarding connectivity issues involving ferry services and rail links at the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Butterworth station.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow admitted these are valid concerns and assured the state is paying close attention.

He said he is encouraged that his executive councillors and relevant agencies are already taking positive steps, including planned upgrades to the KTM Butterworth station and its surrounding facilities.

“This station is a key gateway to Penang, especially for domestic travellers who arrive by rail before crossing over to the island,” Chow said at the launch of the Iconic Majorie Hotel.

“A positive first impression begins there, and it is important that we get this right.”

Media reports previously highlighted that poor connectivity and inconsistent service have turned the ferry-rail transfer into a source of anxiety and delay.

The transit has been described as a gauntlet of long distances, steep stairs and unreliable lifts negotiated under time pressure.

Meanwhile, Chow said Penang has established itself as a key medical tourism hub ahead of the Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026.

He noted the state welcomed 449,289 foreign patients last year, with hotels like the Iconic Marjorie Penang positioned to host such visitors.

“While these numbers are encouraging, what matters most is how tourism growth translates into real benefits for our people,” he added.

Ensuring economic spillover reaches local communities must remain a key priority, he said.
