Barcelona coach demands loyalty amid teen star’s exit reports

Hansi Flick urges La Masia youngsters to ‘live for’ Barcelona’s colours as reports claim 18-year-old Dro Fernandez plans to activate his release clause

BARCELONA coach Hansi Flick has issued a strong call for loyalty from the club’s young players amid reports that teenage talent Dro Fernandez plans to leave.

The 18-year-old midfielder reportedly informed the club this week of his intention to depart in January rather than renew his contract, with a release clause set at €6 million.

Flick expressed his disappointment, suggesting people advising the player were to blame for the decision, with Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund linked.

“I don’t want to answer… as a coach you give a lot of energy to the players, you give them the confidence, you believe in them, you help them to grow and improve of course,” said Flick.

The German coach then delivered a pointed message to Fernandez and other La Masia academy prospects.

“What I want to say to the young players from La Masia, is we are Barca and one of the best teams in the world,” Flick continued.

“We give them the opportunity to train with us, to grow, every day, with the best players in the world.”

Flick, who handed Fernandez his debut in September, emphasised the commitment required. “If you want to play for Barca, then (do it) 100 percent with your whole heart.”

“These colours, you have to live for them, this is what I want to see,” he added, suggesting the youngster would be making a mistake.

On other squad matters, Flick said no decision had been made on making Marcus Rashford’s loan from Manchester United permanent.

“(Sporting director) Deco and I always speak about our team… Marcus’s performances have been really good until now, but we have to wait,” said Flick.

Regarding veteran goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s potential loan to Girona, Flick said, “It’s Marc’s decision… he’s our captain, he’s an idol of this club.”

Flick confirmed winger Raphinha is a doubt for Sunday’s visit to Real Sociedad after missing training with a knock.
