Swedish PM stands firm against Trump’s Greenland tariff threats

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson rejects US tariff threats over Greenland, vowing to defend European sovereignty and coordinate a joint response with allies.

STOCKHOLM: Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose swingeing tariffs on European nations if they block his bid to acquire Greenland.

“We won’t let ourselves be intimidated,” Kristersson said in a statement.

“Only Denmark and Greenland decide questions that concern them.”

He stressed the issue was a European one, vowing to always defend his country and allied neighbours.

Kristersson added that Sweden is engaged in intensive discussions with other EU countries, Norway and the United Kingdom to formulate a joint response.

Trump escalated his quest to acquire Greenland by threatening multiple European nations with tariffs of up to 25%.

He said the tariffs would remain until his purchase of the Danish territory is achieved.

His threats coincided with mass protests in Greenland’s capital against his wish to acquire the mineral-rich Arctic island.

Thousands more people demonstrated in Copenhagen and other Danish cities.
