Over 50 drums of hydrochloric acid burn at illegal dumpsite in Kuala Selangor

A fire at a suspected illegal dumpsite in Kuala Selangor involved over 50 drums of hydrochloric acid, prompting a major hazmat response.

KUALA SELANGOR: A major fire broke out at a suspected illegal dumpsite in Jalan Ijok, Kampung Sentosa, today.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department estimated over 50 drums of hydrochloric acid caught fire alongside a large pile of rubbish.

Director Datuk Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail said the department received an emergency call at 2.08 pm.

Fourteen officers and personnel were mobilised from the Rawang, Bestari Jaya, and Selayang fire stations.

The Hazardous Materials Team from Rawang Fire and Rescue Station was also dispatched to the scene.

“The fire involved a pile of garbage measuring approximately 150 by 50 square feet,” Wan Md Razali said in a statement.

He confirmed the blaze also involved more than 50 drums, each with a 200-litre capacity, of hydrochloric acid.

Firefighters were actively working to extinguish the fire at the time of the report. – Bernama
