Norris feels ‘good’ as McLaren hit track for F1 testing

Lando Norris returns to track as McLaren debut new MCL40 car in Barcelona F1 testing, focusing on reliability amid major regulation changes

WORLD champion Lando Norris returned to the track as McLaren made their first appearance at Formula One’s private testing sessions.

Norris completed 62 laps in McLaren’s new MCL40 car in clear and dry conditions. The twice reigning constructors’ champions had sat out the opening two days of testing this week.

“It was just nice to be back, nice to see the number one on my car. Pretty cool, pretty surreal,” said Norris.

“This was the first time everyone saw the car in one piece — it’s literally not been built until this morning.”

Six teams took advantage of improved weather on Wednesday after Tuesday’s rain-affected session. Alpine, Audi, Haas, McLaren, Mercedes and Racing Bulls all took to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

With major technical regulations set to take effect, teams are focusing on reliability rather than performance this week.

“It’s pretty different,” said Norris. “It’s a bit more of a challenge, which is a good thing.”

He described the day as productive for gaining a first understanding of the whole car. Norris acknowledged it would still take time to gather information in every possible condition.

Despite an unusually short winter break, Norris said he feels ready for the season ahead. He is still trying to accept and realise his championship victory from last season.

“It gives me good confidence coming into this season,” he said. “But it’s such a big challenge with all the regulations, all the changes this year, but I feel good.”
