Flexible road tax rates for e-hailing vehicles start tomorrow

New flexible road tax renewal for e-hailing vehicles begins tomorrow, offering one to five-month options to ease renewal issues tied to permit validity.

PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has announced new flexible road tax rates for e-hailing vehicles, effective tomorrow.

The Ministry of Transport said the move addresses issues where owners struggled to renew their road tax when their vehicle permit had less than six months validity.

E-hailing vehicles can now renew their Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM) for a minimum of one month up to a maximum of 12 months.

Owners have the flexibility to renew for periods between one and five months, where the cumulative fee will not exceed the standard six-month rate.

“This facility only applies as long as the vehicle remains legally registered as an e-hailing vehicle,” the ministry stated.

Renewals remain subject to the validity of the vehicle permit, inspection report and insurance coverage.

Previously, LKM renewal was only offered for six- or 12-month periods.

Under the new structure, specific prorated rates have been introduced for shorter renewal periods.

For example, in Peninsular Malaysia, a vehicle under 1,000cc can now renew for RM2.70 (one month), RM3.40 (two months) or RM5 (three months).

This compares to the existing rates of RM10 for six months and RM20 for 12 months.

For vehicles between 1,404cc and 1,600cc, the new one-month rate is RM8.50, with RM15 for two months and RM22.50 for three months.

The existing six- and 12-month rates for this category remain RM45 and RM90 respectively.

Sabah and Sarawak have a similar structure with lower rates.

There, a 1,404cc-1,600cc vehicle’s new one-month rate is RM7, with RM12 for two months and RM18 for three months.

The existing six- and 12-month rates in the region are RM36 and RM72.

Tax-free areas like Langkawi and Labuan also have newly introduced, lower prorated rates.

In Langkawi, the new one-month rate for a similar vehicle is RM4.80, while in Labuan it is RM4.
