A man accused of spraying Ilhan Omar with liquid at a town hall faces a federal assault charge, with court documents revealing past threats.
MINNEAPOLIS: A US District Court has filed federal charges against a man accused of spraying Democratic lawmaker Ilhan Omar with an unknown liquid.
The criminal complaint states suspect Anthony Kazmierczak, 55, forcibly assaulted and interfered with a US representative performing official duties.
A supporting affidavit says the liquid sprayed from a syringe was likely apple cider vinegar mixed with water.
It also reveals the suspect told a close associate years ago that “someone should kill” Omar.
Kazmierczak allegedly rushed at the Somali-American Congresswoman during a Tuesday evening town hall meeting.
He was tackling immigration raids and calling for Homeland Security chief Kristi Noem to resign at the time.
Security guards immediately tackled the suspect and he was arrested shortly afterwards.
Kazmierczak has a criminal record including drunk driving, according to US media reports.
His social media posts reportedly express support for former President Donald Trump, a frequent critic of Omar.
The attack occurred three days after federal agents killed a second civilian protester in Minneapolis.
The city has been shaken for weeks by a massive anti-immigration operation involving some 3,000 federal agents.
A protest movement against the operations has also grown.
The Trump administration has vowed to conduct future operations in a more targeted way.
It said it would prioritise “community safety” following backlash over the two shooting deaths.
