Senai-Desaru Expressway upgrade 55% complete, on track for 2027

The RM160 million project to widen the Senai-Desaru Expressway to four lanes is progressing smoothly and is scheduled for completion in April 2027.

KOTA TINGGI: The upgrading project to widen the Senai-Desaru Expressway to four lanes has achieved 55% completion.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said the RM160 million project is on schedule for an April 2027 finish.

He confirmed the 30-month construction period requires no extension.

The works cover a 9.34-kilometre stretch from Sungai Johor Bridge to Sungai Semenchu.

Ahmad said the upgrade is expected to boost tourism in Desaru.

“With the four-lane facility, more tourists, including those from Singapore, are expected to visit the area,” he told reporters after a working visit.

He expressed hope the widening could be extended from Sungai Semenchu in the future.

“Perhaps there will be good news later, and let the minister be the one to announce it,” he added.

The Traffic Management Programme in place is efficient and has not disrupted existing traffic flow.

Ahmad listed the SDE upgrade as a ministry priority for Johor.

Other key projects include widening the North-South Expressway from Senai Utara to Yong Peng Utara.

Efforts to resolve traffic issues in Johor Bahru city are also ongoing.

Ahmad noted the SDE was once listed as a less profitable expressway.

He expressed confidence the upgrade would improve both traffic flow and its financial performance.
