Kremlin warns of ‘dangerous’ nuclear moment as treaty expires

The Kremlin warns the world faces a dangerous moment as the last US-Russia nuclear arms treaty expires, leaving no limits on the world’s top arsenals.

MOSCOW: The Kremlin warned on Tuesday that the world was heading into a “dangerous” moment as the last US-Russia nuclear treaty is set to expire this week.

“In just a few days, the world will be in a more dangerous position than it has ever been before,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists during a daily briefing.

The New START treaty, which includes a monitoring mechanism and was signed in 2010, is set to expire on Thursday.

Its expiry would leave the world’s top two nuclear powers without a fundamental document limiting their arsenals for the first time.

The Kremlin, which has offered a one-year extension, said it has not received a response from the United States to this initiative.

Russia suspended monitoring inspections during the COVID-19 pandemic and talks on extending the agreement have broken down in recent years due to tensions over the Ukraine war.

Moscow had also accused Washington of impeding monitoring missions on US soil.

In 2023, Russia froze its participation in New START, but it has continued to voluntarily adhere to the limits set in the treaty.

US President Donald Trump said in September that an extension “sounds like a good idea,” but little has changed since then.

Moscow last year tested its latest nuclear weapon carriers without atomic warheads.

Trump also said he was moving two nuclear submarines closer to Russia.
