Prisons Dept vows action after MACC arrests in Bintulu

The Prisons Department pledges full cooperation with MACC and warns of internal action against any staff found guilty of corruption following arrests in Sarawak.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Prisons Department has pledged to take firm departmental action against any personnel implicated in corruption.

This follows the arrest of several Bintulu Prison staff by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

In a statement, the department said it views the allegations with utmost seriousness.

It affirmed it will provide full cooperation to facilitate the MACC’s ongoing investigation.

The department stressed it fully respects the legal process and will not shield any guilty individual.

“Departmental action will be taken based on the outcome of investigations and relevant legal provisions,” the statement read.

It reiterated an unwavering commitment to integrity, professionalism and governance.

“The Prisons Department… will not compromise on any form of misconduct,” it added.

The statement was issued in response to media reports on a MACC operation at Bintulu Prison.

Several enforcement personnel were remanded yesterday to assist the probe.

Reports indicate 11 enforcement agency staff in Bintulu were remanded for three to five days.

They are suspected of receiving bribes totalling RM239,000.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 40, allegedly took money from inmates’ families between 2020 and 2025.

The bribes were reportedly for ensuring safety and facilitating matters for inmates.

The department also advised the public against speculating on the case.

This is to ensure the investigation is not affected and can proceed smoothly.
