103 candidates confirmed for Negeri Sembilan polls, three-cornered contests dominate

A total of 103 candidates have been confirmed to contest the Negeri Sembilan state election after the nomination process concluded today.

PORT DICKSON: A total of 103 candidates have been confirmed to contest the Negeri Sembilan state election after the nomination process concluded today, with three-cornered contests emerging as the most common form of competition across the 36 state seats.

The Election Commission (EC) said all 103 nomination papers submitted at eight nomination centres statewide were accepted, with no papers rejected after the 10am deadline.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) will contest all 36 state seats, while Barisan Nasional (BN) will field 25 candidates.

Bersatu is contesting independently under its own logo with 24 candidates, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) will contest 11 seats.

The remaining candidates comprise one each from Barisan Jamaah Islamiah Semalaysia (Berjasa), Parti Orang Asli Malaysia (Asli) and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), while four candidates are contesting as independents.

The EC said there will be 11 two-cornered contests, 21 three-cornered contests, two four-cornered contests and two five-cornered contests across the state.

The EC also revealed that the 103 candidates comprise 94 men and nine women.

In terms of age groups, the largest number of candidates are aged between 40 and 49, with 39 candidates, followed by 33 candidates aged between 50 and 59.

A total of 16 candidates are aged 60 and above, 12 candidates are aged between 30 and 39, while three candidates are aged between 18 and 29.

The oldest candidate is PH’s Abdul Latif A Tambi, who is contesting the Gemencheh state seat at the age of 70, while the youngest is Bersatu candidate Leevineshwaraan A/L Murugan, 23, who is contesting Sri Tanjung.

The official campaign period began after the declaration that the seats were contested and will run until 11.59pm on July 31, ahead of polling day on Aug 1.

The EC also said it has established 36 Election Campaign Enforcement Teams to monitor campaign activities by candidates throughout the campaign period.
