A significant forest fire has engulfed approximately five hectares of land within the Penang Botanic Gardens, with firefighting operations ongoing.

GEORGE TOWN: A major fire broke out in a forested area of the Penang Botanic Gardens this evening.

The blaze, estimated to cover five hectares, was reported to the Penang Fire and Rescue Department at 6.24 pm.

Assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said teams from the Jalan Perak and Paya Terubong stations were immediately dispatched.

Five fire engines were sent to the scene along Jalan Kebun Bunga.

“The Operations Commander conducted a size-up at the scene before firefighting works were carried out,” John said in a statement.

Firefighting efforts are continuing with 19 department personnel on site.

They are being assisted by volunteer fire brigades from New Ferry, Paya Terubong and Bukit Bendera.

The operation also has support from the Royal Malaysia Police and the People’s Volunteer Corps.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and remains under investigation.

Authorities have stated that further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
