Security guard fined RM6,000 for impersonating police officer

A Melaka security guard was fined RM6,000 for impersonating a police officer and attempting to rob a Bangladeshi man last week.

MELAKA: A security guard was fined RM6,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here for impersonating a police officer. The 51-year-old, Saril Ismail, pleaded guilty to the charge related to an incident last Sunday.

Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman ordered him to serve five months’ imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine. Saril was accused of committing the offence at Jalan Bendahara at 2.54 pm on Feb 1.

He was charged under Section 170 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both. According to the case facts, the victim was cycling when a man in black approached him claiming to be a police officer.

Saril then grabbed the victim’s bag, checked its contents, and took RM720 in cash. The victim, suspecting the man was not a real officer, subsequently filed a police report.

Deputy public prosecutor Syaza Nur Sharif appeared for the prosecution. The accused was represented by Muhammad Izzuddin Ab Malek from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

Earlier media reports stated police had arrested a father and son suspected of the impersonation and robbery. Central Melaka police chief ACP Christopher Patit said the 51-year-old father and his 25-year-old son were detained on Feb 1 and 2.
