Police have barred the GARAH assembly near Sogo, citing security intelligence and concerns over public safety.
PETALING JAYA: Police have barred the planned Gerakan Anti Rumah Anutan Haram (GARAH) peaceful assembly near the Sogo Shopping Complex, citing security intelligence and concerns over public safety.
In a statement, Kuala Lumpur police chief CP Datuk Fadil Marsus said the police had conducted security assessments and gathered feedback from relevant parties, including owners of premises in the surrounding area.
“The Dang Wangi district police chief also held discussions with the organisers on Feb 5.
“However, on Feb 6, police received objection letters from the owners of Sogo Complex, Pertama Complex and Harissons, as well as nearby premises, citing concerns over the safety of customers during the period of the planned gathering,” he said.

Fadil said police also received independent intelligence indicating potential breaches of the peace and threats to public safety, as the area is expected to be crowded with shoppers in conjunction with several festive celebrations.
“After due consideration and assessment of security intelligence, the assembly is expected to pose risks to public safety.
“Therefore, the police have decided not to permit the organisers to proceed with the assembly,” he said.
He added that the public is advised not to attend the gathering, and that firm action will be taken against any party that attempts to incite disorder or disrupt public safety at the location.
“Police will ensure that public safety and public well-being remain the top priority,” he said.
The assembly was scheduled to be held on February 7 at 8pm at the Sogo Shopping Complex.
