Hannah Yeoh inspects key development projects in Labuan

Minister Hannah Yeoh’s first official visit to Labuan focuses on water, waste, and tourism projects, pledging to prioritise residents’ basic needs.

LABUAN: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has conducted her first official working visit to the island since assuming her portfolio.

The visit focused on reviewing the implementation of development projects impacting residents’ daily lives.

Yeoh prioritised key basic needs including solid waste management, water supply stability and sustainable local economic development.

She held coordination meetings with Labuan Corporation’s top management to assess ongoing projects and identify implementation challenges.

“I’m also engaged with Labuan’s tourism industry players to explore opportunities to strengthen the island’s regional tourism potential,” she told reporters.

Yeoh inspected the progress of three key projects as part of a ground-level approach.

These included a new sanitary landfill cell and an upgraded leachate treatment plant at the Kampung Bukit Kalam landfill site.

“Labuan Corporation (LC), together with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), will be working to conduct a study on effective and cost-efficient waste disposal methods,” she said.

She also visited a proposed RM11 million eco-tourism and public recreation project along the Nagalang coastal road.

The project aims to boost Labuan’s tourism sector and create economic opportunities for local communities.

In addition, Yeoh inspected a proposed RM2.5 million water storage tank project at the Taman Mutiara and LDA Sungai Bedaun housing areas.

This project aims to increase water storage capacity and strengthen Labuan’s water supply system.

“Basic issues such as stable water supply, safe waste management, and local economic opportunities directly affect people’s daily lives,” she said.

She affirmed these issues will continue to be prioritised in development planning and implementation on the island.

Yeoh was accompanied by Labuan MP Datuk Indera Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman and Labuan Corporation chairman Datuk Mohd Husni Mohamad Salleh.

Senior officials from the Federal Territories Department and related government agencies were also present.
