Communications ministry to help fire victims replace SIM cards for free

The ministry will assist Orang Asli fire victims in Johor by replacing their damaged SIM cards at no cost to help them stay connected

JOHOR BAHRU: The Ministry of Communications will assist fire victims from Kampung Orang Asli Teluk Jawa by replacing their damaged SIM cards free of charge.

Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching said an estimated 70 SIM cards belonging to victims were destroyed in the fire on Feb 12.

She stated that telecommunications companies will soon visit the temporary relief centre at Dewan Muafakat Taman Megah Ria to facilitate the replacements.

“Normally, replacing a SIM card can incur a fee, but we will work with the telecommunications companies to make sure victims get theirs replaced for free,” Teo said.

She expressed hope that the companies would assist on humanitarian grounds given the victims’ circumstances.

Teo emphasised that keeping victims connected with family and information is vital.

She also confirmed that 4G and 5G coverage at the relief centre is strong and stable.

Earlier during her visit, Teo, who is also Johor DAP chairman, distributed RM500 in cash from DAP to each of the 40 affected families.
