DAP leaders must respect special congress outcome, says Chow

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow says all DAP members must abide by decisions made at the party’s July 12 special congress, which will function as an internal referendum.

GEORGE TOWN: All DAP members and leaders must abide by any decisions and resolutions reached at the party’s special congress scheduled for July 12. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasised this point today.

He stated the announcement would allow delegates to channel the views of party members and supporters through proper party mechanisms. This ensures any final decision reflects the will of the majority.

“As stated by the Secretary-General (Anthony Loke), this meeting is an internal party referendum and it is very important,” Chow told reporters. He was met at a Chinese New Year open house in the Padang Kota constituency.

Loke recently said the congress would let delegates decide whether party office-bearers should relinquish all government positions. He also confirmed DAP’s 40 MPs would continue supporting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government until the end of its term.

Chow added that discussions on a party’s role within a coalition administration are normal democratic practice. He clarified that DAP is not withdrawing its support from the MADANI Government.

“The issue being discussed concerns DAP’s role in the government, specifically whether to continue holding ministerial posts,” Chow said. He stressed the discussion is about positions, not about leaving the government.
