KUALA LUMPUR: The reciprocal trade agreement signed with the United States today will not affect Malaysia’s national sovereignty.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz reiterated that Malaysia also gains better market access than previously agreed.

“If you look at the agreement, it respects both national sovereignty; we will not sign something that will affect our national sovereignty,” he told a press conference today.

“The US has offered better and secured market access compared with our earlier commitments,” he said.

Tengku Zafrul added that Malaysia is satisfied with the trade deal clinched with the US.

He said that the agreement, which ensures a more open trading environment, would enhance investor confidence.

Based on this, he said that American firms would be more keen to expand their operations in Malaysia. – Bernama
