KUALA LUMPUR: No damage to federal assets or roads has been reported following the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Sabah.
Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed the situation is being closely monitored by his ministry.
“We have not received any reports of damage but when an earthquake occurs, the KKR will continue to monitor the situation from time to time,” he said.
He was speaking after officiating the launch of the Construction Action Plan 2026–2030.
Nanta highlighted that Malaysia has long adopted building design codes for earthquake resilience.
The Malaysian National Annex to Eurocode 8 has been a requirement since the end of 2017.
This code adapts international standards to address structural resilience.
The earthquake, centred 49 kilometres west of Kudat, struck at 12.57am.
It was the strongest tremor recorded in the country in 11 years.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department confirmed it did not pose a tsunami threat.
