Luxury watch shop assistant manager denies RM1.7m laundering

A luxury watch shop assistant manager pleads not guilty to 44 money laundering charges involving RM1.7 million, with bail set at RM105,000.

KUALA LUMPUR: An assistant manager of a luxury watch shop pleaded not guilty to 44 charges of money laundering involving RM1.7 million.

Miki Oshiro, 36, entered his plea after the charges were read before Sessions Court judges Izralizam Sanusi, Azrul Darus and Norma Ismail.

The charges allege he received RM1.7 million from a 61-year-old female customer. He is then accused of transferring RM628,499, believed to be proceeds from illegal activities, from his savings account to various individuals and companies.

All offences were allegedly committed at two banks in Damansara Utama, Petaling Jaya between October 5, 2024 and January 3, 2025.

The charges fall under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. Conviction carries a maximum 15-year jail term and a fine of at least five times the illicit sum or RM5 million, whichever is higher.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Izham Mohd Marzuki proposed bail at RM15,000 with one surety. He requested additional conditions prohibiting witness interference and requiring monthly reporting to the Bukit Aman AMLA division.

“The accused has no risk of absconding because his passport has been kept by the court for the offences he was previously accused of,” said Mohd Izham. He noted the offence impacts the country’s economy and banking system.

Defence lawyer S. Narasimhan applied for lower bail, citing his client posed no flight risk and supports his elderly mother.

The court set bail at RM105,000 with one surety. Oshiro must also report monthly to the AMLA division until the case concludes.

The case is set for mention on February 27. Oshiro was previously charged on February 21 with five counts of defrauding four individuals in luxury watch sales worth over RM2 million.
