Nuklear Malaysia project narrows regional radiation processing gap

GEORGE TOWN: A project led by the Malaysian Nuclear Agency has successfully narrowed the development gap in the radiation processing industry among Asia-Pacific member countries.

The four-year RAS1028 project began in 2022 under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Regional Cooperative Agreement.

It focused on enhancing quality management practices and dosimetry systems for radiation processing facilities.

These improvements ensure facilities comply with international legal and regulatory standards.

Malaysia’s role as lead country coordinator reinforces its position as a key research and development agency in peaceful nuclear technology.

The agency issued a statement today in conjunction with the project’s final review meeting.

The meeting was titled “Improving the Quality Management Practices in Radiation Processing Facilities for Better Performance and Applications”.

Nuklear Malaysia director-general Dr Muhammad Rawi Mohamed Zin officiated the meeting and emphasised regional cooperation’s importance.

He described the project as proof that Asia-Pacific nations can collaborate effectively to raise quality standards.

“This not only ensures the safety and efficacy of operations but also drives innovation and growth in related industries,” he said.

Muhammad Rawi expressed appreciation for the trust placed in Nuklear Malaysia as lead coordinator.

He also acknowledged the cooperation among member states throughout the project.

The meeting convened representatives from fourteen member countries across the region.

Participating nations included Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, India, and the Philippines.

Other attending countries were South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, and Myanmar.

Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam also sent representatives to the meeting.

Key objectives included presenting the project’s activities and outcomes to participants.

Malaysia was mandated to lead development of a certification checklist for irradiation facilities.

This checklist will serve as an important reference for improving quality practices across the region.
