GEORGE TOWN: Police have confirmed receiving a report from a car driver involved in a viral incident where a commotion broke out outside Masjid Jamek Sungai Nibong last night during the burial of Commander Muhammad Firdaus Ramli, the Royal Malaysian Navy’s (RMN) Squadron 503 commanding officer, who died in the crash involving two helicopters on Tuesday.
Timur Laut district police chief ACP Razlam Ab Hamid (pix) said the 46-year-old man claimed that a motorcycle hit the right side of his car while he was driving along the road in front of the mosque at around 7.45 pm.
“Panicked by the situation, the man honked his car horn, causing a crowd to surround his car, which suffered minor damage.
“However, the situation was brought under control by police officers and Navy personnel on duty,” he said in a statement today.
Razlam said that the complainant admitted to being unaware of the event at the mosque and clarified that he did not intentionally honk the horn.
As such, he advised the public against making speculations that could interfere with police investigations and disrupt public order.
The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code.
Muhammad Firdaus, 44, was among 10 Navy personnel who died when two helicopters collided and crashed at the RMN Base in Lumut, Perak, at 9.32 am on Tuesday.
He was laid to rest at the Masjid Jamek Sungai Nibong Besar Muslim Cemetery last night.
