BANGKOK: Thailand has initiated the withdrawal of heavy weapons from its border with Cambodia following Sunday’s signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord.

Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed Thailand expects this process to continue earnestly to ensure border community safety.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasised strengthening coordination on transnational crime cooperation, landmine clearance, and border management agreements.

He noted the Joint Declaration provides a foundation for both countries to progress forward with sincere implementation.

Anutin and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet signed the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and United States President Donald Trump.

Both nations agreed to military de-escalation under ASEAN Observer Team monitoring including heavy weapons removal from border areas.

Anutin stated Thailand will reciprocate once Cambodia begins withdrawing its heavy weapons from the border region.

The Thai Prime Minister held a bilateral meeting with Hun Manet during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

Siripong said both leaders discussed close cooperation to translate agreements into practical implementation quickly.

The prime ministers agreed to enhance diplomatic communication and schedule early foreign minister meetings.

Both countries’ citizens and media are closely monitoring implementation progress according to the spokesperson.

He stressed both sides must demonstrate tangible progress and act in good faith to ensure citizen stability and safety.

Siripong added Anutin thanked his Cambodian counterpart for condolences on Queen Sirikit’s passing.

Thailand and Cambodia have maintained an 817-kilometre border dispute with recent tensions escalating on July 24.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar hosted a crucial Putrajaya meeting on July 28 that successfully eased border tensions.

The resulting ceasefire represents a significant ASEAN achievement preventing conflict escalation and protecting civilians. – Bernama
