Johor becomes Malaysia’s first smart state five years ahead of schedule

Johor achieves smart state status early, with all 16 local authorities reaching smart city levels and Johor Bahru leading nationally.

JOHOR BAHRU: Johor has made history by becoming Malaysia’s first smart state, achieving this milestone five years ahead of schedule.

State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor confirmed all 16 local authorities in Johor have attained at least Level 1 Smart City Early Adopter status.

This accomplishment means Johor has met the targets outlined in the Johor Smart City Blueprint 2030 well before the 2030 deadline.

“The Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) also made history by becoming the first local authority nationwide to attain Level 3 Leading Smart City status,” Mohd Jafni stated.

He emphasised that the smart city initiative represents modern governance focused on people’s wellbeing and sustainable progress.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof officially acknowledged Johor’s achievements during national planning events in Putrajaya.

Strategic implementations include Smart Command Centres in every local authority and over 2,000 smart CCTV cameras in Greater Johor Bahru.

Air sensor systems in industrial and residential areas further demonstrate the state’s comprehensive approach.

Intelligent traffic systems and integrated complaint management systems have been deployed alongside digital business licensing.

Renewable energy adoption and AI-driven waste management systems represent key technological advancements.

“All these initiatives not only enhance the efficiency of public service delivery but also strengthen safety, cleanliness, and the quality of life for Johor’s people,” Mohd Jafni added.

The state government is actively implementing the Johor Green Deal agenda to ensure sustainable development.

Key focus areas include expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure and adopting green energy practices.

Community awareness programs promoting low-carbon lifestyles complement the digital transformation efforts. – Bernama
