Despite floods shop owner maintains business to ensure villagers receive supplies

TUMPAT: Despite the floods, Mohd Noor Ismail, a 35-year-old provision shop owner in Kampung Kajang Sebidang, continues to run his business to help locals acquire essential goods.

He said the area around his shop was inundated by one-metre deep water due to the overflow of Sungai Golok since yesterday evening.

“There are still villagers coming to buy necessities because most of them refuse to relocate as they are accustomed to the flood situation.

“They come here by boat because all the roads are submerged. Luckily, my store has a wide entrance, and boats are able to enter the shop,“ he said when met by reporters here today.

A check by Bernama in Kampung Kajang Sebidang found that the village had transformed into an island due to the overflow of Sungai Golok.

Mohd Noor added that to facilitate transactions, he doesn’t mind wading through the floodwaters to place customers’ purchased items in their boats.

“They usually purchase weekly supplies of rice, candles, sugar, and milk. Many are unwilling to evacuate and once they know my store is still operating, they come in their boats to get food supplies,” he said.

Yet, Mohd Noor said he plans to stay overnight in his store due to worries about break-ins during the flood season.

“Throughout this flood season, I will keep the store open, provided the conditions are not too severe,” he said. – Bernama
