Projek Air Perak-Pulau Pinang – Jamin kelangsungan bekalan air

GEORGE TOWN: Pelaksanaan Projek Air Perak-Pulau Pinang menjamin kecukupan bekalan air di negeri ini berikutan peningkatan permintaan yang dijangka mencecah 1,532 juta liter sehari (JLH) menjelang 2030 dan 1,844 JLH pada 2040.

Menyifatkan projek itu sebagai berita baik untuk Pulau Pinang dalam tempoh lima dekad, Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) K. Pathmanathan berkata projek itu berupaya meningkatkan kapasiti bekalan air bagi menyokong kemajuan sosioekonomi, sekali gus meningkatkan pertumbuhan Keluaran Dalam Negara Kasar (KDNK) negeri.

“Pelaksanaan projek itu juga membolehkan air disalurkan terus kepada pengguna air di Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) kerana air dari Perak akan dipam ke kawasan selatan tanah besar.

“Jadi, Projek Air Perak-Pulau Pinang akan menambah baik dan menstabilkan bekalan air untuk kira-kira 79,956 pengguna di SPS,” katanya dalam kenyataan.

Pathmanathan menjelaskan sekiranya projek tersebut dilaksanakan, berkemungkinan PBAPP tidak perlu lagi mengepam air dari Loji Rawatan Air (LRA) Sungai Dua di Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) ke SPS dan jumlah air terawat yang lebih tinggi daripada LRA itu boleh disalurkan semula kepada kira-kira 491,153 pengguna air di SPU, Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT), Daerah Barat Daya (DBD) dan Daerah Timur Laut (DTL).

Beliau berkata membeli air sungai yang dirawat secara konvensional dari Perak melibatkan perbelanjaan lebih rendah berbanding menyahgaram air laut atau mengitar semula air sisa di Pulau Pinang.

Menurutnya, projek bekalan air utama terakhir dilaksanakan kerajaan Persekutuan untuk Pulau Pinang ialah Skim Air Sungai Muda pada 1973 di bawah Perdana Menteri ketika itu Allahyarham Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, dan sepanjang 51 tahun, negeri ini hanya bergantung kepada sungai tersebut sebagai sumber air mentah.

Pada 5 Mei lepas, Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim mengumumkan Perak bersetuju membekalkan air kepada Pulau Pinang melalui Taman Perindustrian Hijau Bersepadu Kerian ke Seberang Perai.
