Editor Sarawak Report, dua lagi diperintah bayar RM300,000 kerana fitnah Sultanah

PUTRAJAYA: Mahkamah Rayuan hari ini memerintahkan editor Sarawak Report Clare Rewcastle-Brown dan dua yang lain membayar ganti rugi RM300,000 kepada Sultanah Terengganu Sultanah Nur Zahirah kerana memfitnah baginda.

Panel tiga hakim yang terdiri daripada Hakim Datuk Hadhariah Syed Ismail, Mohamed Zaini Mazlan dan Datuk Azhahari Kamal Ramli membenarkan rayuan Sultanah Nur Zahirah untuk membatalkan keputusan Mahkamah Tinggi pada 31 Okt lepas yang menolak saman baginda terhadap Rewcastle-Brown, penerbit Gerakbudaya Enterprise Chong Ton Sin dan syarikat percetakan Vinlin Press Sdn Bhd.

Dalam keputusan mahkamah yang disampaikan secara dalam talian itu Hakim Azhahari berkata kenyataan dalam buku bertajuk “The Sarawak Report-The Inside IMDB Expose” adalah fitnah terhadap Sultanah.

Beliau berkata mahkamah juga mendapati Chong serta syarikat percetakan Vinlin Press bertanggungjawab bersama kerana memfitnah Sultanah, dan memerintahkan ketiga-tiga responden untuk bersama-sama membayar ganti rugi RM300,000 kepada Sultanah Nur Zahirah.

Beliau turut mengarahkan Rewcastle-Brown, Chong dan Vinlin Press membayar kos RM120,000 kepada Sultanah Nur Zahirah.

Pada 21 Nov 2018 Sultanah Nur Zahirah memfailkan saman fitnah dengan menamakan Rewcastle-Brown, Penerbit Gerakbudaya Enterprise, Chong Ton Sin dan syarikat percetakan, Vinlin Press Sdn Bhd, selaku defendan pertama hingga ketiga, mendakwa mereka telah menfitnah baginda menerusi sebuah buku bertajuk “The Sarawak Report-The inside Story of the 1MDB Expose”.

Baginda mendakwa kenyataan berbaur fitnah itu antara lain bermaksud baginda terlibat dalam amalan rasuah dan mencampuri urusan pentadbiran kerajaan negeri Terengganu selain menggunakan status baginda untuk mempengaruhi penubuhan Lembaga Pelaburan Terengganu (TIA) yang kemudian dikenali sebagai 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Sultanah Nur Zahirah juga mendakwa kenyataan itu membawa maksud baginda membantu ahli perniagaan dalam buruan Low Taek Jho atau Jho Low, menjadi penasihat TIA.

Dalam pernyataan tuntutan, baginda menuntut ganti rugi am RM100 juta daripada setiap responden dan juga perintah supaya penerbit menarik balik buku yang didakwa mengandungi kenyataan fitnah itu serta pencetak berhenti mencetak buku berkenaan. – Bernama
